Celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day in Sustainable Style!

By Karen R. Smith

We all enjoy sharing a toast to Saint Patrick on March 17th and it proves there’s a little bit of Irish in everyone! Wearing something green is a ‘shout out’ to this beloved patron Saint, but this year, why not go green in the sustainable sense too?

Fashion January 2017 Fashion: Start the New Year Right

By Karen R. Smith

Back in the day (in this case, way back!) bed linens were only available in white, so putting those on sale was automatically a ‘white’ sale, and the term has stuck despite all the colors, patterns and styles of household linens available today. Retailers traditionally saw a slump after Christmas; that was eliminated by deeply discounting necessary household linens in the weeks immediately after the holiday. Today, the tradition continues, and it’s still called a White Sale despite all the colors and patterns that are now available.

Fashion December Fashion: Holiday Shopping Guide

By Karen R. Smith

I think there are two kinds of people in the world--the folks who enjoy the actual physical experience of Christmas shopping, and the folks who avoid it like the plague!! I've got friends in both camps and there are ideas for everyone here

Fashion November Fashion: The Lowdown on Ankle Boots

By Karen R. Smith

At every Fall and Winter show I attended, ankle boots were the big news. They completed every look, and whether they were paired with feminine dresses or butch trousers, they looked perfect. After years of high boots and the endless UGG craze, ankle boots look fresh, finished and fabulous!

Fashion October Fashion: How to Celebrate Halloween Without Hollowing Out Your Wallet!

By Karen R. Smith

Halloween has become big business and is now second only to Christmas in terms of holiday revenue generated. If you’re a baby boomer, no doubt you recall a simpler time, when a sheet made a ghost or a cardboard box became a robot. Now, with a Halloween boutique in just about every neighborhood, and major retailers adding huge Halloween sections on their sales floors, it’s a whole new ballgame, filled with choices for costumes and decor. While that’s certainly terrific if you want - and can afford - a store-bought experience, many families are seeking something more personal and less expensive. There’s no substitute for the fun of creating Halloween together, and anyone can do-it-yourself with a little imagination and a lot of laughs!

  Fashion Fall Finds

By Karen R. Smith

Despite the continued warm sunny days here in Tucson, it’s still Fall. Little kids went back to school, college kids returned to classes, and we’ve flipped the calendar to September. So although we’re still enjoying the pool, by now the straw bag and sandals are tired...and so are we! I’m not suggesting that we need to don boots and sweaters. It’s not Minneapolis, after all. But I do think a change of style and color feels right at this time of year, and it’s a chance to introduce a difference into the mix. The real difference in spending Fall in the sunny southwest is one of fabrics. Easterners are removing their wools and such from storage; we’re just switching from linen to rayon!

Fashion And the Heat Goes On...

By Karen R. Smith

While the rest of the country is starting to plan for Autumn temperatures, we’re just hitting our stride here in southern Arizona, where the three-digit days will go on for several months, and maybe more! One of the reasons to love this season is that you can put away anything heavy or fussy and stick with simple basics. A good friend of mine hones her wardrobe down to four foundational pieces to ride out the heat, and it’s a brilliant system. She culls everything else out for spring and fall, keeping only white tee shirts, black tee shirts, denim shorts and all sorts of skirts out for the dog days of summer. I suggest you give it a try, because it’s truly an easy and fabulous way to ride out the heat!

Fashion Cool (and staying that way!)

By Karen R. Smith

There comes a moment when it’s just too hot to shop. A moment when we’re happier staying home rather than brave the escalating temperatures. When you’d rather not leave the comfort of air conditioning, swimming pool and that pitcher of margaritas. Crank up the AC... stay home... and go shopping via your keyboard. There are fabulous clothes out there, just waiting for you to find them via the internet, and free shipping abounds. Besides, when evening comes, you’ll want fabulous things to wear when it’s cool enough to go outside!

  Fashion Shoulders back!

By Karen R. Smith

Looks like our three-digit days are here again, so dressing for the warm weather is the way to go for the next five months or thereabouts. By now, you’ve seen as many beautiful off-the-shoulder dresses and tops as I have, and probably at least a few have followed you home. I have one question: were you as miserable wearing yours as I was in mine???

If you’re starting your travels with the onset of Spring, as many of have, it’s time to consider how to look your best when you’re away from home. Needless to say, where you’re headed may be dictating some of your wardrobe choices, like needing formal wear for the weekend galas on a cruise ship or hiking shoes for a visit to Yellowstone National Park.   Fashion Warm Up with Hot Trends!

By Karen R. Smith

One of the advantages of living in Tucson is we get high temperatures with the onset of Spring, so we can try out fashion’s summer trends before the rest of the country. There are several new looks I’ve been itching to try, and now’s a great time to experiment if you decide it’s not for you, you’ll be able to take it back to the store and exchange it for something else.

  Fashion Color me Confused

By Karen R. Smith

This being the March issue of Tucson Happenings, I was all set to discuss all things green. Not in the sense of recycle/reuse, since I’d written on that recently, but in the sense of the actual color green and its popularity in everything from clothing to carpets.

Fashion New Options as the Days (and some of the skirts) get longer

By Karen R. Smith

I’ve seen lots of terrific clothing in the Spring shows and thought this column would be a great place to tell you what you can find right in your own neighborhood (or at your own computer). Some of these are already available; others are being phased in as the weather warms up.

  Fashion Flat and Fabulous

By Karen R. Smith

With the start of a new year, I need to make a confession so as to renew our acquaintance with clarity and honesty. Here goes: the most exciting shoes I have seen for 2016 are (brace yourself!) FLATS. I make this statement as a woman who owns nothing but heels; even my tennis shoes have a wedge. Normally, I don’t even look at flats, but 2016 is different. Flat shoes are suddenly fantastic and available in a broad range of styles and materials. Flat shoes are… dare I say it? Fabulous!
